The Nose Knows » Tue, Apr 24th 2007 8:26 pm
When we got Tyra, I was pretty excited to own a breed of dog that was notorious for having a kick-ass nose. Then, one day on the baseball field, my hopes of employing her to sniff out things I’d lost were suddenly dashed.
We were playing “500” on the field. For those unfamiliar, it’s basically someone hitting a ball with a bat while the others scramble to catch it first. Anyway, my parents were walking Tyra during one of these games when—as dogs do—she decided to chase the ball with everyone else.
The ball left the bat and soared probably fifty or more feet into the air before returning to Earth. Meanwhile, Tyra was on the ground doing her best to get under it. Now, dogs are supposedly colour blind, so how she expected to track the trajectory of a white ball through the air (on a light blue background) we’ll never know. She did manage to get it surprisingly close to her mouth, but as I’m sure you’ve guessed by now, she took the ball square in the snout.
She shouted a soul-piecing dog scream that I’ll never forget. Then, after a few shakes of her head, she was at my feet waiting for me to bat off another ball. She’s tough as NAILS.
Anyway, this photo basically illustrates the aftermath of that event. I’m not entirely sure if the ball is really to blame for her crappy sense of smell—because she can be pretty stupid in general—but it’s the most obvious cause, in my mind. In her defence, she never gives up a search.
