Water Bug #1 » Sun, Jul 3rd 2005 7:26 pm

These annoying-but-cool water insects were found dwelling in the stagnant water of our pool this spring. This was my first macro shot of an insect.

Why is there a dark ring around the insect? It makes for a cool effect I guess, but I think it would have looked better with the full blue background.

    Neat.

It’s called vignetting—-sort of an optional camera RAW setting. I tweaked it on this one because I thought it looked better. I can remove it, but I like the black ring around the subject for macro shots; gives them a voyeuristic look I guess? As though I’m peering at them through a very long telescope or something. I dunno.

Sort of looks like the bug is on stage, “I’m a star baby”. He starts dancing doing the can can and what not.
