I’ve been seriously contemplating the purchase of an Apple computer. The prices are steep, but I reckon I could find one for cheap on eBay. My reason for wanting to switch is simply that I want a change. The Apple software seems to have been designed with the beauty of the interfaces as a top priority. Many Windows applications look like ass. As for Linux, I’d say ugly apps make up the majority. Fedora’s pretty decent, but nothing I’ve seen holds a candle to the Macs; they’re glorious.

Macs are also more designer-oriented, and not just because they’re pretty. They’re powerful buggers—from what I hear—so Photoshop should run as nicely as it looks. Despite the stories from the 90’s, I’m pretty sure the stability of these machines is a big selling point. I haven’t had many problems with my Windows PC, but the thought of running an OS designed on hardware made by the same people is very tempting.

I think if I can manage to sell my other bike and get paid for my pending jobs, I might actually pursue this Apple thing. I just hope I don’t turn into one of those glazed-eyed “I use Apple products”; zombies you see with the Apple t-shirts and iPods. Ick.

I switched to a Mac a couple of months ago, bought the Mac Mini from the Apple Store online. I wasn’t sure what it’d make of it but I’ve actually been pleasently suprised… nothings broken or anything it’s all quite happy. Except that a few weeks after I bought it Tiger came out and suddenly I was on an out-of-date OS… never mind. It’s still a much more productive computer experience than with my old Windows PC smiling face

    So… what was the decision?

I’m thinking I’ll want to upgrade my comp in the next little while, and I’ve been thinking about an Apple. I don’t particularly need any of the power, I just like the idea of having a crisp, bug free machine. Your brother has told me not to buy one though.

I haven’t bought one, and I don’t think I will anytime soon. Perhaps if I’m ever loaded enough to drop $5,000 on a graphics-only machine, I might. Otherwise, PCs are just more productive for what I do. (Read: I like to play games.)

You don’t have to drop $5000 on one. I’m on a Mini Mac right now at work (web design) doing video editing and everythings going very smoothly. They go for about $700CAN on ebay I think. Dosn’t come with a monitor or anything though… just the box with some basic software.

That may be true, but unless I bought the top-end model, it’d just feel like I paid to use a new OS. Macs, I don’t think, are anymore productive than PCs. The top-end ones outperform PCs though, so that’d be a reason to go Apple (unless that’s changed, too).
